Amazon is reportedly in talks with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) to produce a series of television specials in partnership with the broadcaster.
Sources familiar with the matter tell Fortune the talks have been in the works for some time, but it’s now officially happening.
The BBC is one of the most powerful broadcasters in the world, with a network of over 500 million TV households.
The talks are also believed to be the first time that Amazon and the BBC have reached an agreement.
The talks are being spearheaded by Amazon’s Prime Video unit, which has been in talks for years with BBC executives.
Amazon Prime Video is a service that lets customers stream TV shows and movies for free via its cloud-based streaming service.
The company is currently exploring a wide range of new business models, including partnerships with major movie studios and music publishers, to build a platform that can rival Netflix and Hulu.
In addition to the new deals, Amazon also recently signed a deal with HBO that allows its subscribers to stream the first two seasons of Game of Thrones, and also a series called The Man in the High Castle.
Amazon also announced a new initiative called Amazon Video Music that will stream music and music videos through its streaming service Prime Music.
It’s unclear whether these new deals will have an impact on Amazon Prime subscribers, who already receive a discount on streaming content.
That’s likely because the new Amazon Music deals will not affect Prime subscribers at all, and will only affect customers who subscribe to Prime.
The new Amazon TV deal is expected to launch in the coming months.
